Is Your Yorkie Acting Out? What the Behaviour Might Mean

When a normally calm Yorkie starts growling, snapping, toileting indoors, or chewing things they never touched before, it is easy to feel frustrated. But acting out is almost never about being "naughty." It is usually a sign that something is wrong.

Common reasons a Yorkie's behaviour changes:

  • Pain or discomfort. Dental problems, arthritis, ear infections, and eye issues are common in Yorkies and can make any dog irritable. A vet check is always the right first step.
  • Changes in the home. A new baby, a new pet, a move, or even a change in your work schedule can throw a Yorkie off balance. They are creatures of habit and disruption can look like behaviour problems.
  • Boredom or under-stimulation. Yorkies are intelligent dogs. Without enough mental and physical activity, they find their own entertainment, often in ways you will not enjoy.
  • Age-related changes. Senior Yorkies can develop cognitive dysfunction (like dementia in humans). Confusion, restlessness, and changes in sleep patterns are not acting out. They are medical issues that need veterinary attention.

If your Yorkie's behaviour has changed suddenly, start with a vet. If you have ruled out medical causes and the behaviour is making it difficult to keep your dog, talk to the rescue team before you make a final decision. Many behaviour issues can be managed with the right support, and you do not have to figure it out alone.
