Yorkie Behaviour Issues: When to Seek Help
Yorkies are clever, confident little dogs, but they can also develop behaviours that worry their owners. Excessive barking, separation anxiety, resource guarding, or aggression towards other dogs are not signs of a "bad" Yorkie. They are usually signs that something in the dog's environment or history needs attention.
If your Yorkie is showing behaviour that concerns you, here is a practical starting point:
- Rule out medical causes first. Pain, dental issues, vision loss, or thyroid problems can all cause behaviour changes. A vet check should always come before a behaviour plan.
- Think about what changed. Have you moved homes? Started working different hours? Added a new pet or person to the household? Yorkies are sensitive to change, and behaviour issues often show up after a disruption.
- Look at the dog's history. Rescue Yorkies who came from difficult situations may need extra time to feel safe. Reactivity or fear-based behaviours are not defiance. They are survival responses that need gentle, consistent retraining.
When training is the right step, look for a positive-reinforcement trainer who understands small breeds. Avoid aversive methods. Yorkies are sensitive dogs and harsh corrections can make behaviour problems worse.
If the behaviour issues are severe enough that you are considering rehoming your Yorkie, please do not rush into a private handover. Contact the rescue team first. There may be options you have not considered, including training support, temporary fostering, or a structured rehoming process that keeps your dog safe.
